Vietnam Packaging: Green Shift & Recycling
Vietnam’s packaging industry faces green transition and recycling challenges, driven by stricter rules, global standards, and demand for sustainable products.
Vietnam’s packaging sector is under increasing pressure to embrace the green transition, driven by domestic regulations, international standards, and rising demand for sustainable products.
1. Industry Collaboration for Recycling
To respond, businesses created the Packaging Recycling Alliance (Pro Vietnam). The coalition works to build a national recycling ecosystem and strengthen Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).
At the 2025 Green Transition Forum and Recycling Fair, Nguyen Gia Huy Chuong, CEO of Pro Vietnam Recycling JSC, outlined the progress:
-
2022: A pilot program collected 3,000 tons of PET bottles and paper cartons.
-
2023: The project expanded to seven material types, reaching 14,000 tons.
-
2024: The alliance surpassed its EPR target by recycling more than 64,000 tons.
However, challenges remain. Waste sorting at source is still weak, enforcement is limited, and consumer participation is low. As a result, recycling costs stay high and low-value materials often go uncollected. Moreover, exporting recycled products to the EU remains difficult because of strict certification requirements.
Looking ahead, Pro Vietnam plans to expand partnerships, apply digital tools for waste classification and data management, and promote eco-friendly packaging design. By 2030, member companies aim to collect and recycle all packaging they place on the market, contributing directly to a circular economy.
The coalition aims to build a comprehensive recycling ecosystem and strengthen Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in a practical way.
2. Plastic Recycling: From Waste to New Life
At the same time, plastic recycling is gaining momentum. Duy Tan Recycling demonstrates how discarded bottles can transform into food-grade containers, textiles, cosmetics packaging, and household products.
Although Ho Chi Minh City generates 13,000 tons of waste daily, less than 1,000 tons enter recycling streams. Plastic waste, in particular, pollutes rivers and oceans, endangering marine life.
Duy Tan tackles this challenge with:
-
Three collection stations and 2,900 collection points nationwide.
-
Partnerships with 100 suppliers.
-
A daily processing capacity of 200 tons (15 million bottles).
-
An annual design capacity of 100,000 tons, equal to 6 billion bottles.
The goal is to ensure that by 2030, all packaging placed on the market by member companies will be collected and recycled, contributing to a circular economy.
Today, its recycled products serve global brands such as Coca-Cola, Lavie, and Unilever, while also reaching markets in the U.S. and Europe. The plant follows a “three-zero” model: zero solid waste, zero emissions, and zero wastewater. Additionally, it reuses 132,000 cubic meters of water each year.
To support a circular economy, Duy Tan is formalizing the informal waste collection sector. The company now provides training, safety gear, and insurance, while piloting modern collection models.
“Today’s water bottle may have been waste just months ago. With proper recycling, it becomes a valuable resource for the green economy,” emphasized Le Anh, Sustainability Director at Duy Tan Recycling.
