Vietnam Expands Eco-Label for Green Packaging
Hanoi, June 2025 – Environmentally friendly plastic packaging in Vietnam must meet a strict set of requirements on raw materials, production processes, technical standards, and safety before being awarded the Vietnam Eco-Label certification.
According to official statistics, seven product brands were certified with the Vietnam Eco-Label in 2024. As of June 20, 2025, six more brands have been recognized, bringing the total to 13 certified products and services over the past two years. All certified items are eco-friendly plastic packaging produced by enterprises across the country.

The certification remains valid for 36 months from the date of issuance. The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment requires businesses to maintain compliance with all registered criteria. Companies must also submit annual reports on product improvement and sustainability performance for guidance and inspection.
1. Strict Criteria for Certification
The Vietnam Eco-Label recognizes products and services that meet rigorous environmental standards. For the eco-friendly plastic packaging category, certification is granted under Decision No. 3257/QĐ-BTNMT issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment).
Approved raw materials include bioplastics for biodegradable packaging and recycled PE or PP plastics for reusable packaging, provided they are cleaned and processed to meet safety standards. Additives must not contain any substances on the government’s banned list.
In addition, certified packaging cannot use harmful inks, colorants, or chemical agents that could endanger human health or the environment. Products must comply with national or international quality standards and meet technical limits on pollutant emissions.
For the eco-friendly plastic packaging category, certification is granted under Decision No. 3257/QĐ-BTNMT issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment).
2. Performance Requirements

Biodegradable packaging must achieve a minimum degradation rate of 90% within two years under natural conditions such as outdoor environments, landfills, or composting systems.

Recycled packaging must contain at least 20% recycled plastic, with a minimum thickness of 50 micrometers and each dimension measuring no less than 50 centimeters.
