Low-Carbon Packaging for a Greener F and B Future

Low-Carbon Packaging for a Greener F&B Future

In the race toward sustainability, packaging innovation is becoming a game-changer for Vietnam’s food and beverage (F&B) industry. The newly introduced Tetra Recart — a renewable, low-carbon paper-based packaging — is helping businesses minimize emissions while improving efficiency and product quality.

In the race toward sustainability, packaging innovation is becoming a game-changer for Vietnam’s food and beverage (F&B) industry.

1. Vietnam’s F&B Industry on a Growth Track

According to Euromonitor, Vietnam’s food and beverage market is projected to reach VND 872.9 trillion by 2027, growing at a CAGR of 10.25% (2023–2027). While this presents huge potential, it also brings new challenges as environmental standards tighten.

From January 2024, Vietnam’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policy has come into effect, requiring manufacturers to take responsibility for their products’ entire lifecycle — from design to disposal — in line with global sustainability goals.

Consequently, F&B businesses face a dual challenge: maintaining profitability while meeting sustainability targets. This is where smart packaging solutions play a pivotal role.

2. Tetra Recart: A Low-Carbon, High-Performance Solution

According to Tetra Pak’s Ahead of Retail Trends report, packaging today is not only a protective layer but also a brand communication tool that directly influences consumer choice. Sustainable packaging helps companies reduce carbon emissions, optimize logistics, and extend shelf life — all while enhancing their green credentials.

In July, Tetra Pak Vietnam launched Tetra Recart, the world’s first heat-resistant paper-based packaging. Developed in Sweden, this innovation keeps the food’s texture, flavor, and nutrients intact for up to 24 months without preservatives or refrigeration.

Made from over 70% renewable materials sourced from FSC-certified forests, Tetra Recart significantly reduces carbon emissions. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) conducted in Europe (2020) found that Tetra Recart’s carbon footprint is 85% lower than tin cans and 83% lower than glass jars. Moreover, it consumes only 40% of the energy required by traditional metal or glass packaging throughout its lifecycle.

3. Recyclable and Efficient by Design

Beyond being eco-friendly, Tetra Recart is fully recyclable. High-quality paper fibers can be reused to make printing or writing paper, while polymers and aluminum are repurposed into roofing sheets, pallets, furniture, or insulation materials.

Additionally, its rectangular, lightweight design offers major logistics and storage advantages. Businesses can transport 10–20% more units per truck and stack 12% more per pallet compared to cans of similar volume, resulting in lower transportation costs and carbon output.

4. Driving Operational Efficiency and Market Expansion

According to Phung Diep Kim Thu, Sales & Business Development Director at Tetra Pak Vietnam, the first Tetra Recart production line installed in July has already increased productivity 1.5 times, reduced manpower from 40 to just 6 workers, and cut logistics and operational costs by up to 60%.

These benefits not only support cost optimization but also empower Vietnamese food processors to export more high-value products that meet international standards for safety and sustainability — opening doors to demanding markets such as Europe, the U.S., and Japan.

5. The Future of Sustainable F&B Packaging

As Vietnam’s F&B industry continues to evolve, sustainable packaging will be a key driver of long-term growth. By combining responsible production with innovative packaging like Tetra Recart, businesses can align profitability with purpose — turning sustainability into a competitive advantage.
