Greening Packaging: Opportunities Accompanied by Challenges
The trend of transitioning to green packaging presents businesses with the dual challenge of adapting production while protecting the environment.
1. An Irreversible Trend
The Net Zero target for 2050 has imposed an urgent requirement for green transformation in both the production and use of packaging for businesses. During the implementation of eco-labeled packaging, companies encounter numerous difficulties and challenges.
2. Greening Packaging – Opportunities Accompanied by Challenges
Over 41% of consumers are willing to prioritize products with eco-friendly packaging
Ms. Nguyễn Như Hảo, a representative from the Packaging Solutions Department of Rieckermann Vietnam Co., Ltd., stated that in Vietnam, plastic packaging is projected to increase from 10.07 million tons (in 2023) to 15.09 million tons (by 2028), with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.44%.
In reality, consumers are increasingly aware and concerned about environmental issues. Surveys show that over 41% of consumers are willing to prioritize products with eco-friendly packaging, and 57% are willing to pay extra if the price difference compared to regular products is not too significant.
Commenting on the urgency and benefits of emission reduction solutions and the development of the green packaging industry, Ms. Hảo asserted that it would help businesses lower operational costs, improve production efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and minimize risks from emissions.
These solutions also help businesses mitigate legal risks, enhance competitive advantages, particularly in export markets. Sharing the same viewpoint, Mr. Hoàng Minh Anh Tú – General Director of Tan Binh Culture Joint Stock Company, noted that the packaging industry is growing rapidly at an average rate of 15–20% annually.
Recycled packaging technology and smart packaging solutions are becoming an irreversible trend in the market
Accordingly, the rapid increase in packaging waste has put tremendous pressure on the environment, necessitating an urgent green transition in both packaging production and usage.
In terms of environmental benefits, green transformation in packaging production helps reduce solid waste, prevent soil and water pollution, and conserve natural resources. It also relieves pressure on landfills, reduces non-biodegradable plastic waste, protects natural ecosystems, and promotes recycling and reuse of materials, thus minimizing new resource exploitation.
Regarding economic benefits, it helps businesses cut waste treatment costs thanks to the biodegradability or recyclability of green products, and reduces environment-related fees. Moreover, it opens new markets and export opportunities, especially to countries with strict environmental standards.
According to Mr. Lương Xuân Dũng – Chief of Office of the Vietnam Beer, Alcohol and Beverage Association, developing the green packaging industry not only helps businesses meet environmental regulations but also provides a long-term competitive advantage.
Recycled packaging technology and smart packaging solutions are becoming an irreversible trend in the market. Greening the packaging sector is a crucial step that not only contributes to environmental protection but also brings great benefits to businesses and the community.
3. Focusing on Technology Solutions to Reduce Costs
Many economists believe that for products consumed domestically as well as those exported, besides quality, consumers also pay particular attention to product packaging, ensuring it is safe and compliant with both Vietnamese and international standards.
This requires businesses to invest more in research and development, innovate production technologies, use green and renewable materials, and apply various solutions in packaging production. It demands significant investment in capital, time, effort, and workforce skills.
Many companies need to adopt green production technologies with the goal of reducing packaging costs.
From a business perspective, Mr. Hoàng Minh Anh Tú shared that, in the face of challenges when adopting emission reduction measures and developing green packaging, many companies need to adopt green production technologies with the goal of reducing packaging costs.
Additionally, businesses should implement training programs for technicians and staff, apply eco-label production standards, strengthen international cooperation, acquire advanced technologies from developed countries, and learn from their manufacturing experiences.
Meanwhile, for consumers, it is essential to raise public awareness through communication, education, and widespread promotion programs; encourage green living by using eco-labeled packaging or promoting recycling and prioritizing green products in daily consumption.
