E-Commerce Boom Fuels Waste and Emissions

Vietnam’s e-commerce explosion is triggering environmental alarms, with soaring packaging waste and carbon emissions fueling urgent calls for sustainable reform.

E-Commerce Boom Fuels Waste and Emissions

As UN Trade and Development’s Digital Economy Report 2024 highlights, e-commerce is disrupting business models, economic processes, and consumption patterns, bringing with it both opportunities and challenges for environmental sustainability.

1. Surging Packaging Waste in Vietnam

In 2023, Vietnam’s rapidly expanding e-commerce sector produced 332,000 tonnes of packaging waste, including 171,000 tonnes of plastic—a volume over five times greater per purchase than that generated through traditional retail channels . Without intervention, plastic waste could climb to 800,000 tonnes annually by 2030.E-Commerce Boom Fuels Waste and Emissions

2. Waste Disproportionate to Value

Analysts note that the high packaging-to-product ratio is exacerbated by the prevalence of low-value impulse orders and free shipping incentives, which lead to excessive use of cardboard, plastic, foam, and tape.

3. Online Shopping vs. Brick-and-Mortar

Studies show online purchases generate about 4.8 times more packaging waste than equivalent in-store spending. Recycling rates remain low—globally, less than 14% of plastic packaging is recycled.

4. Transportation & Carbon Footprint

While precise local CO₂ figures weren’t reported, global assessments underscore that fast deliveries, remote warehouse logistics, and increased returns significantly amplify emissions. Optimizing delivery routes and using recycled packaging could reduce emissions by 30-40%, according to projections.

5. Public Demand for Green Action

A VECOM survey revealed that 80% of online consumers believe e-commerce has a negative environmental impact, and 79% want the government to enforce environmental regulations, while 71% urge businesses to disclose eco-friendly packaging options.
