Digital Packaging: Vietnam’s New Export Edge
At the conference “Packaging and Export Branding 2025 – From Trend to Action”, held on October 29 during the Autumn Fair 2025, Mr. Lê Hoàng Tài, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency (VIETRADE) under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, highlighted one of the most important trends shaping the global packaging industry — the digitalization and smart transformation of packaging.

Major export markets such as the EU, the United States, Japan, and South Korea have implemented strict regulations on eco-friendly packaging.
1. Packaging and Branding: Key to Global Competitiveness
Speaking at the event, Mr. Tài emphasized that Vietnamese products have reached more than 200 markets worldwide.
However, for Vietnamese goods to stand firm and go further, businesses must focus not only on product quality but also on packaging and branding — two critical factors that define value and create distinctiveness in the eyes of global consumers.
He explained that packaging today is no longer just a “shell”, but rather the language of the brand — telling its story, expressing its commitment, and reflecting its vision.
“A creative, elegant, eco-friendly packaging design that fits local culture can increase a product’s export value by 10 to 30%, and even influence the consumer’s purchase decision,”
Mr. Tài remarked.
2. Three Global Trends Shaping the Future of Packaging
According to Mr. Tài, the world is witnessing profound changes in the packaging industry, driven by three major trends:
2.1. Green and Sustainable Packaging
The first and most dominant trend is green packaging and sustainable development.
Major export markets such as the EU, the United States, Japan, and South Korea have implemented strict regulations on eco-friendly packaging.
The shift toward reducing plastic, using recycled or biodegradable materials, and encouraging reuse is not only a legal requirement but also a moral commitment of businesses to the planet.
This trend, while challenging, presents a golden opportunity for Vietnamese enterprises to transform, affirming their responsibility and position in the global green supply chain.
2.2. Digitalization and Smart Packaging
The second trend focuses on digital and intelligent packaging.
Technology is ushering in a new era where packages can “communicate” with consumers through QR codes, NFC chips, or digital platforms.
This innovation allows businesses to trace product origins, manage quality more effectively, and tell their brand stories in a transparent and engaging way.
In the near future, integrating digital elements into packaging will become a key competitive advantage for Vietnamese products in the international market.
2.3. Packaging as a Core Part of Brand Strategy
The third trend highlights the strategic connection between packaging and brand identity.
Modern consumers no longer just buy products — they buy values, trust, and experience.
Therefore, a strong brand must maintain consistency across quality, design, message, and packaging.
Mr. Tài described packaging as “the silent ambassador”, the first touchpoint between a business and its customers.
When properly invested in, packaging helps Vietnamese brands shine in the minds of global consumers.

3. Opportunities and Challenges for Vietnamese Businesses
Mr. Tài also pointed out that these emerging trends represent both challenges and opportunities for Vietnamese enterprises.
Vietnam has significant advantages in industrial packaging production, including modern printing and design capabilities, competitive costs, and a young, creative, and adaptable workforce.
By combining design, technology, and storytelling, Vietnamese companies can strengthen their brands and expand their reach both domestically and internationally.
“Moving from trends to implementation requires vision, persistence, and collaboration. If the Government provides supportive policies, enterprises continue to innovate, and organizations work together, Vietnam’s packaging industry will surely make a breakthrough — contributing strongly to national branding and sustainable export growth,”
Mr. Tài concluded.
4. Future Directions: Building a Green, Smart, and Global Packaging Industry
In the coming period, VIETRADE plans to enhance training programs and consultancy on packaging design and export brand development tailored to each market and industry.
The agency will also support businesses in transitioning to circular and eco-friendly packaging models, while promoting green trade initiatives linked with brand development and sustainability standards.
5. Conclusion
The digitalization and smart transformation of packaging are no longer distant concepts — they are the future of global trade.
For Vietnam, embracing these trends means not only keeping up with the world, but also leading responsibly, ensuring that “Made in Vietnam” products continue to grow in value, visibility, and reputation across international markets.
